Custom Technology & Market Briefing 2:
MEMS microphones and micro-speakers market

MEMS microphones have entered the marketplace late in 2003 and already realised a $ 56 million turnover in 2005. Over the next few years, we expect an annual growth by 62%, driven by the mobile phones and laptops. By 2010, the overall market will be worth $680 million, predominantly for mobile phones, notebooks, digital cameras, camcorders, PDAs and other appliances such as dictation recorders. There will be modest penetration of automotive markets, leveraging arrays of microphones to allow noise suppression in hands-free speakerphones, for example. Hearing aids are challenging to produce, e.g. have a very low noise floor, and will remain a small market.
