Custom Technology & Market Briefing 4:
MEMS timing devices market
MEMS oscillators are emerging for timing applications. The reference
oscillator market is worth $ 3,2 billion and is dominated by Quartz
Oscillators today. MEMS offer advantages in terms of size, power
consumption and integration compared to quartz and better performances
than CMOS clocks. However, inherent limitations of MEMS including
temperature stability and the need for vacuum packaging have been
hindering their commercialisation so far. Following recent progress
realised at Discera, SiTime and SiliconClocks, first MEMS timing
devices are expected to hit the market by the end of 2006 and could be
a $ 140 million market in 2012.
Core part of the briefing
- Technical overview of MEMS timing devices: resonator, IC, oscillator…
- Comparison with competing technologies such as quartz and CMOS
- Applications in detail today and in 2012: XO (Crystal Oscillators), TCXO (Temperature Compensated XO), RTC (real time clock)...
- Key technical requirements by applications: frequency, stability, integration with IC…
- Price requirements and expected price evolution for resonator, for full timing devices)
- Challenges and opportunities:
- Opportunities in products with relaxed specs (first generation)
- Opportunities in products requiring higher stability (second generation)
- Opportunities and challenges for higher integrated solutions
- Key players, latest developments
- Market forecasts, detailed by application
Principle of the custom market briefing
- You prepare your specific questions in advance (techniques and economics)
- We build on our existing knowledge and carry out additional specific
research to answer your strategic questions (3 to 4 weeks)
- We present and discuss the result in a custom briefing at WTC in Munich, at your company or in a teleconference
